Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. While many people recover naturally over time, others continue to experience symptoms that interfere with daily life, relationships, work, and overall well-being.
The good news is that PTSD is treatable. With evidence-based therapies, supportive care, and early intervention, many individuals experience significant improvement and regain a sense of safety and control.
At Florida Acupuncture and Counseling, we provide compassionate, trauma-informed care to help individuals heal both emotionally and physically.
What Is PTSD?
PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that may develop after exposure to a traumatic event, such as:
- Military combat
- Physical or sexual assault
- Serious motor vehicle accidents
- Natural disasters
- Childhood abuse or neglect
- Domestic violence
- Sudden loss of a loved one
- Medical trauma
- Witnessing violence or death
Although trauma is common, not everyone who experiences a traumatic event develops PTSD. Individual factors such as genetics, previous trauma, available support systems, and the severity of the event all influence recovery.
Common Symptoms of PTSD
PTSD affects both the mind and the body.
Symptoms generally fall into four categories:
Intrusive Symptoms
- Flashbacks
- Distressing memories
- Nightmares
- Emotional distress when reminded of the trauma
Avoidance
- Avoiding people or places associated with the event
- Avoiding conversations about the trauma
- Emotional numbness
Changes in Mood and Thinking
- Depression
- Feelings of guilt or shame
- Difficulty trusting others
- Loss of interest in enjoyable activities
- Social isolation
Changes in Physical and Emotional Reactivity
- Hypervigilance
- Being easily startled
- Irritability or anger
- Difficulty sleeping
- Difficulty concentrating
Some people also experience physical symptoms such as:
- Rapid heartbeat
- Muscle tension
- Digestive problems
- Headaches
- Chronic pain
Who Is at Greater Risk?
Research estimates that approximately 70% of people experience at least one traumatic event during their lifetime. However, only a portion develop PTSD.
Factors that may increase risk include:
- Previous trauma
- Limited social support
- Repeated exposure to traumatic events
- High-stress occupations such as military service, law enforcement, emergency medicine, and firefighting
- Childhood adversity
- Existing anxiety or depression
PTSD can affect people of every age, gender, race, and background.
Why Early Treatment Matters
Early intervention can make a significant difference in recovery.
Without treatment, PTSD symptoms may become more severe and begin affecting multiple areas of life, including relationships, employment, physical health, and emotional well-being.
PTSD is also associated with an increased risk of:
- Depression
- Anxiety disorders
- Substance use disorders
- Sleep disorders
- Chronic pain
- Relationship difficulties
Seeking professional help early can improve long-term outcomes and reduce the impact of symptoms.
Evidence-Based Treatment for PTSD
PTSD is highly treatable, and treatment plans are individualized based on each person’s needs.
Evidence-based therapies include:
- Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
- Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
- Somatic approaches
- Medication management when appropriate
Many individuals benefit from combining psychotherapy with healthy lifestyle habits and supportive complementary therapies.
Integrative Care for PTSD
Healing from trauma involves more than reducing emotional symptoms—it also includes helping the body recover from chronic stress.
At Florida Acupuncture and Counseling, we offer integrative services that may complement evidence-based mental health treatment, including:
- Individual counseling
- Trauma-informed therapy
- Acupuncture
- Medical massage therapy
- Stress reduction techniques
- Mind-body wellness support
Some research suggests acupuncture may help reduce stress, improve sleep, and decrease anxiety symptoms for some individuals. Massage therapy may also promote relaxation and reduce muscle tension. These therapies should be viewed as complementary to—not replacements for—evidence-based PTSD treatment.
Recovery Is Possible
Living with PTSD can feel overwhelming, but recovery is possible.
With compassionate support, effective treatment, and a personalized care plan, many people experience meaningful improvements in their symptoms and quality of life.
Whether your trauma occurred recently or many years ago, it’s never too late to seek help.
If you or someone you love is struggling with PTSD, Florida Acupuncture and Counseling is here to support your journey toward healing.
